At the corner of Makedonias Street you can trace the evolution of the balcony, a new element of Cypriot architecture brought by the British.

Before their introduction, Cypriots preferred sachnisi, completely covered wooden balconies.

In the hot climate, this form is much more practical one.

On the left side, you can see the first timid open balconies, painted green.

And opposite, a house of a pinkish hue with five gray open balconies stands out. Let’s imagine the ladies, its noble inhabitants of the end of the 19th century in luxurious dresses in the high of colorful Victorian fashion. They somehow didn’t find appropriate going out into the dusty street, but they didn’t mind to look down from above at what was happening on the street.

Here is such anelegantly ornated house with five balconies (in fact, the balconies continuealso on its end facade).
