Do you remember, an hour ago we looked at the first seven-story apartment building, the failed business of the architect Kolakides?
Twenty turbulent years have passed, and this type of housing has become dominant in Cyprus, helped in part by hundreds of thousands of refugees following the the occupation of 40% of the ground of the island by Turkish troops.
The Kanika company, founded by people originated from occupied Famagusta, built here the largest residential complex on the island: 750 apartments, 250 retail spaces and offices, and inside the courtyard, the Pantheon Hotel with a swimming pool.
Unfortunately, the role of architecture has been reduced to nothing here: no poetry of the first concrete decades of the works of Michaelides, Economou, Mavrommatis.
The poetic name “Enaerios” (aerial) comes to the residential complex from the name of a nearby pier: it is reminiscent of the grand cableway for transporting asbestos from the mine in Troodos. It was built a hundred years ago. The trolleys traveled 36 kilometers from the mine to the pier in two hours, after which their contents were poured directly into the barge.
Here at Enaerios we encounter the quintessential dream of high-density housing that came to the island in the 1960s. Still now, the area remains a growth point. The construction of skyscrapers is being completed on the block immediately next to the the complex.
Changes are inevitable, but it is such a pity that Limassol is losing its historical monuments, although it could well afford to restore them.
I hope that the publication of this guide and your participation in this walk is another small step toward realizing the value of heritage and environment for our lives.
